Nestar was in a precarious situation when his owner was forced to move to a smaller apartment. Nobody would take him even though he was a young three year old golden retreiver. It did not help that he had sarcoptic mange (a skin condition) at that time. This is a condition that could be cured with proper medication and care within a few weeks, but most people could not see past the physical aspect and appreciate his gentle, unassuming and affectionate temperament.
Grace and Felicia were looking for a family companion at that time and we invited them to come down to have a bonding session with Nestar.
We were initially hesitant as they were first time pet owners and having to deal with an additional medical condition may be too much of a ‘culture shock’. But they were very forward looking and were willing to nurse Nestar back into the pink of health. They could see that Nestar was good with their kids and had a lovely character.
Eight months down the road, Nestar is in the pink of health. It had been a long road to his recovery, for his skin was sensitive to diet and he was a fussy eater as well, but Felica and Grace took it all in their stride, reading up, monitoring his progress and making appropriate changes. They bring him to the park for long walks and Nestar loves them for ‘spoiling’ him. He is especially close to the children, who regard him as a ‘big’ brother.
We are grealty inspired by Grace and Felicia who, with their optimistic outlook, and together with their very committed and dedicated attitude, has made the transition from ‘newbies’ to caring and knowledgeable dog owners, of whom we can learn a thing or two from!
