News - No Dog Left Behind

Posted On: 01 Sep 2025

The cost of running a dog shelter has skyrocketed in recent years. With adoption numbers decreasing, and the cost of living increasing, we are struggling to keep our doors open and provide safe, loving environments for dogs in need. ASD and many other shelters, are also facing unprecedented numbers of returned and abandoned dogs, alongside exponentially increasing medical bills. This means more dogs are being turned away, more are spending a longer time at the kennels, and many will never know the comfort of a home.

At ASD, we believe that every dog, regardless of age, breed, or size, deserves a chance at a loving home. But to continue this, we need your help.

As of 31 July 2025, ASD has 80 dogs in our kennels at The Animal Lodge, with an additional 50+ dogs across many foster homes. Our kennel dogs cost us on average $300 - $500 a month, excluding medical expenses. Dogs in foster homes are also all under our ultimate care, with ASD covering their food and vet bills.

To put these numbers into perspective, our adoptions hit their peak during covid, with 270 dogs rehomed during 2020. This has been steadily decreasing since, with 239 adoptions in 2021, 149 adoptions in 2022, 91 adoptions in 2023 and an all time low of 82 adoptions in 2024.

Will you champion our cause? Today, you have the power to change the future for a dog in need. Every dollar contributed helps us combat rising shelter costs and ensures that more dogs get the care, love, and Second Chances they deserve.
